SNOBSESS
adjective - snob·sess
snobsessed, snobsessing, snobsession, snobsesses
having or showing excessive or compulsive concern with something to the point where you ostracize others for their preferences or tastes - often of or relating to popular culture such as movies, music, food, or literature.
"Dean broke up with me because I wanted to see Prime instead of The Squid and the Whale. He's so snobsessed."
Ref: "High Fidelity" (2000, dir. Stephen Frears). When Barry (Jack Black) rudely turns away a customer who asked if they have "I Just Called To Say I Love You". Snobsession in action.
Customer: Hi, do you have the song "I Just Called To Say I Love You?" It's for my daughter's birthday.Posted by graig at November 25, 2005 11:24 AM
Barry: Yea we have it.
Customer: Great great... Well, can I have it?
Barry: No, you can't.
Customer: Why not?!
Barry: Beacause its sentimental tacky crap thats why. Do we look like a store that sells "I Just Called to Say I Love You"? Go to the mall!
Customer: What's your problem?!
Barry: Do you even know your daughter? There's no way she likes that song! Oh oh oh wait!, is she in a coma?
Customer: Oh, okay buddy. I didn't know it was Pick on the Middle-aged Square Guy Day. My apologies. I'll be on my way.
Barry: Buh-bye
Customer: Fuck you!

THAT is a funny scene.
i dated a guy once who was the epitome of snobsessed and quite honestly felt he was superior than the masses. i don't think i'm better than anyone but at the same time, i'm not worse either. He seemed to think i was, i guess.
p.s. "The Squid and the Whale" is a great film!
Posted by: jenn at November 25, 2005 1:56 PMI often tell people to "Go to the Mall" when I have had it with them. If they get the reference, I regain some tolerance. If you ever belabour something tasteless with me or if you show particularly Lionel Ritchie taste, I will tell you to Go ---
I also dated a few snobsessed men. One even insulted my parents so that he wouldn't look uncool -- The worst kind of awful.

Posted by: wN at November 25, 2005 4:25 PMWorse than the snob is the indignant and very militant Anti-Snob Everyman. People think they are punk rock or Michael Moore sticking up for the little guy as they state their preference while dismissing someone else's as elitist or geeky. Can't we all just get along? The first two examples are actual quotes from real life conversations.
"Ooh, Heath Ledger. Lets go see A Knight's Tale instead. What is Pollock about anyway? *groans* Yeah, we'll go see A Knight's Tale and YOU can go see Pollock"
*phone rings as I'm watching tv*
Them : Ryan!
Me : Hey, what's up?
Them : Nothing much. What are you doing?
Me : I'm watching Masterworks. Its on TVO.
Them : *sighs* Oh jeez.
Me : Why, what are you watching?
Them : *distracted for a few seconds* Oh me? World's Biggest Building Explosions. Can I let you go? The show is back on."
This is more of a composite response from a message board comment...
